Women’s Hockey

This year saw a repeat of a combined Queen’s and St Hilda’s team which entered for league matches and Cuppers, and included a significant number of university players. Consequently, the 1st division league matches played in Michaelmas Term produced an outstanding set of results, beating St Edmund Hall/Keble 4-0, Brasenose 6-0, and New/Magdalen 8-0. A few early training sessions, consistent commitment and skill from team members, and a great sense of team spirit, was rewarded by a highly successful league season.

The Cuppers competition presented a new challenge in Hilary Term. The team’s automatic start in the quarter-finals determined that the first opponents would be Jesus College. The match was unnervingly close and was taken to penalties, allowing Queen’s/St Hilda’s to progress to the semi-final against Worcester. Another well-fought match resulted in a well-deserved win and a place in the final for the sixth year running. At a glance the odds might have seemed to be in favour of their opponents St Catherine’s, given the impressive credentials of their starting line-up. However, the determination, teamwork and great skill shown by Queen’s/St Hilda’s proved to be a real challenge to the opposition, who, despite several attempts at goal, could not break through. In a closely-fought match, characterised by persistence, teamwork, and simple yet intelligent game-play, Queen’s/St Hilda’s held the score line at 2-1. The match was well attended by supporters (college peers and family) and all members of the team were proud to have been able to take part. The team’s nucleus from Queen’s included Stephanie Anthony, Eli Begg, Anna Booth, Sasha Burnet, Ellie McAllister, Tilly Thatcher and Clare Webb
