Men’s Captain: Matthew Pickles

LAWN TENNIS REPORT

With former blues captain Mark Carpenter having moved on, little was expected of Queen’s men’s tennis team this year. But the squad’s strength in depth ensured a thrilling run to the Cuppers semi-finals. In the second round, a 9-9 draw with University College led to the match being settled in a play-off a week later, in which Thomas Bowden and James Kelly came from behind to win. A convincing win over Corpus Christi sent Queen’s into the semi-finals, where they lost narrowly to a very strong Exeter team boasting two university second string pairs. Queen’s form in the league was mixed, with losses to New and Wadham counterbalanced by a fine win at Pembroke. Regulars have included Dylan Grainger, Caroline Lawrence, Thomas Bowden, who was approached by the University team after his performance in the semi-finals, Jonty Strachan and next year’s captain, Charles Martin. In women’s tennis a strong new intake bodes well for the future, with Ravic, Durrans, Mountain and Namih bolstering the experienced team Weatherburn, Newnham, Lawrence and Simpson.
