MEN’S LAWN TENNIS REPORT

2011 was a positive season for Queen’s men’s tennis. After a great 2010 when promotion to the top flight was secured by the first team, the Club looked to build upon its success and improve on the previous year’s Cuppers performance. Helped by a large influx of talented freshers, the feeling in the camp was optimistic, and this was vindicated by a strong performance, and third-place finish, for the first team in the league. Despite many rowing commitments, the second team performed respectably in the second division, and next year’s captain will be hoping to obtain a more focussed approach from the team to tennis. However, Cuppers aspirations were cut cruelly short for the second year in a row. Facing Worcester in the first round in the first match of the season, there were obviously some cobwebs to be blown out, and after some sublime tennis from everyone involved, including a nail-biting 8-6 tie-break defeat for freshers Euan Lawson and Euan Campbell against the Worcester first pair, Queen’s found itself at 4 sets all with only one set left in the balance. Rob Farendon and Jamie Brandwood were 5-2 down and early elimination again looked imminent, but somehow they found a second wind and battled back to 5-5. By this point the players were exhausted, and unfortunately the result went against them.
