2012 – 2013

MEN’S LAWN TENNIS

Officers: Captain Euan Lawson

Despite the poor early season weather, the trials and fresher additions augured well for the tennis squad. With Queen’s in the top division and Queen’s second six in the division below, all league matches brought challenges to which both teams responded admirably. Possibly the most satisfying was an 11-1 victory over St Edmund Hall. In Cuppers the first four, Euan Campbell, Matthew Green, Bertie O’Brien and Michael Pandya, was strengthened by the addition of women’s blues players, Rebecca Bibb and Amy Partridge. The team reached the quarter finals with ease before losing to eventual champions Worcester in a hard-fought battle. Since only one of the team is leaving this year, there is some hope that the team can make the extra steps to Cuppers victory next year.

The highlight of a superb season was Queen’s victory in Cuppers in the last week of term which was celebrated by the College in the hall on the last day of term.

There was much enthusiasm at the start of term with a large number of players available, including many such as Sian Allen, Katherine Arnot, Rebecca Bibb, Emma Micklewright and Amy Partridge of a high standard. The first three matches in league format produced easy wins over Trinity and Balliol and an unfortunate defeat on game count to Lady Margaret Hall. The quarter-final brought a 5-1 victory over Lincoln and the semi-final against Hertford was almost embarrassing, the opponents only managing to win one game in six matches. The final was played on the University grass courts on a beautiful sunny day watched by a large contingent of Queen’s supporters who cheered the team on to a 6-0 victory over Worcester.

It was a wonderful season in all ways and it is hoped that it can be repeated next year.
